Overview

A nine-day private route linking three very different Chinese cities. Beijing delivers the imperial set-pieces — the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall at Mutianyu — before a flight takes you to Chengdu for the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base and the teahouses of People's Park. A second flight brings you to Guangzhou, where the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Shamian Island and Canton Tower show the city's trading and modern sides. The rhythm is unhurried, with one principal sight cluster daily and space to wander. Includes both flights between the cities, a private vehicle and an English-speaking guide.

Day 2

Forbidden City, Jingshan & Summer Palace

Begin at the Forbidden City, the Ming- and Qing-dynasty palace enclosure that housed twenty-four emperors behind its vermilion walls. Cross to Jingshan Park for a panorama over the rooftops, then travel to the Summer Palace, the Qing imperial retreat built around Kunming Lake. Your guide explains the layout of the courtyards and the role the sites played in court life.

Day 3

Great Wall at Mutianyu & the Bird's Nest

Drive north to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, a Ming-dynasty stretch restored with watchtowers and fewer crowds than other sections. Walk the ramparts and take in the ridge-line views before returning to the city for a photo stop at the Bird's Nest (exterior), the stadium built for the 2008 Olympic Games.
