Overview
Eleven days tracing China's imperial axis from Beijing through Pingyao, Xi'an and on to Shanghai. In Beijing you follow the central landmarks through the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall at Mutianyu; a high-speed train then carries you to the preserved Ming-era town of Pingyao and the Wang Family Courtyard. In Xi'an the Terracotta Army, the City Wall and the Muslim Quarter await, before a flight to Shanghai for the Bund and the old town. A measured route for travellers who want the three great cities plus Pingyao without hurrying. Includes the intercity high-speed trains and flight, a private vehicle and an English-speaking guide.

Day 5
High-Speed Train to Pingyao
Take the high-speed train to Pingyao, a remarkably intact Ming-dynasty walled town. Walk the streets within the City Wall, where the grid of shops, residences and the old rishengchang draft-bank recalls a 19th-century banking centre.

Day 6
Wang Family Courtyard
Devote the day to the Wang Family Courtyard, a vast Qing-dynasty clan residence in Lingshi built over more than a century from the 17th century. Its courtyards, carved stone gateways and defensive layout show the wealth and taste of a Shanxi merchant family.
